Understanding Brain Aneurysms

What is a Brain Aneurysm?

A brain aneurysm, also called a cerebral aneurysm, occurs when the wall of an artery in the brain becomes weak and forms a balloon-like bulge. This bulge can grow over time and may eventually rupture, leading to severe medical complications or even death.

While the direct causes of aneurysms are still unknown, risk factors include high blood pressure, smoking, and a family history of aneurysms. Many aneurysms are discovered during an autopsy, which is why early detection and education are so critical. Shaneen’s Dream Aneurysm Foundation is dedicated to raising awareness and educating the public on how to spot the early warning signs.

Aneurysm Symptoms

Early detection can save lives. If you or someone you know experiences any of the following symptoms, it’s important to seek medical help immediately. Recognizing these signs can make all the difference

Confusion

Dizziness

Headache

Blurred Vision

Nausea

Vomiting

High Blood Pressure

If you notice these symptoms, call 911 right away. Quick action could save a life.

How Are Aneurysms Detected?

Detecting a brain aneurysm often requires specialized medical tests, which can help identify the condition before it becomes life-threatening. Here are some common tests used to diagnose brain aneurysms.

Why Awareness Matters

Brain aneurysms affect an estimated 6.5 million people in the United States, with over 30,000 ruptures occurring each year. Tragically, about 50% of those who experience a rupture will die within 24 hours. Even survivors face life-long challenges, including cognitive, physical, and emotional difficulties. Despite these numbers, aneurysm research remains severely underfunded.

Raising public awareness about the symptoms of brain aneurysms can help save lives. By educating yourself and those around you, you can be a part of the solution.

Advocating for More Research

In memory of Ellie, a young woman who tragically passed away from a brain aneurysm, Shaneen’s Dream Aneurysm Foundation is advocating for the passage of Ellie’s Law. This bipartisan bill seeks to reauthorize federal funding for brain aneurysm research, which is critically needed to prevent more tragedies.

Shaneen has shared her story at the state capitol, fighting for better funding and pushing for increased research to understand and treat aneurysms. We invite you to join our advocacy efforts and help make Ellie’s Law a reality.
